Shiny Discs and Silver Screens

A request for some suggestions peoples. easterbunny and I have just signed up for the Blockbuster DVD-by-post service and I was hoping for some suggestions of classic must-see movies which you think my life is lessened by not having viewed.

So, come one, come all, bestow upon me your movies of niceness.

That is all.

Edit: Don't worry if you think I may have seen them, if I have you're only confirming our shared good taste. :) Come movies old, new, arthouse and mainstream.

How 'classic' is classic? Anything back more than about 20 years is mostly a mystery to me. But just a couple of my all time favourites movies since then are (and trying to avoid anything reasonably recent or hugely blockbuster-y that you've probably already seen):

- Chasing Amy, and Clerks, although for the full Kevin Smith effect see all five Kevin Smith movies in order. Be warned they're each very quite different movies. Mall Rats requires you to be in a very silly mood first, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike back even sillier.
- Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
- The Princess Bride
- Amelie
- The Big Lebowski
- Das Boot
- Brazil
(warning: last two films not to be viewed when in even the slightest state of depression. Not even if all you've done is stubbed your toe)

Um, there are more, but I need to go to bed...
I suppose classic in the traditional sense (old which has stood the test of time) and recent decents too. :) Generally top fillums which need to be seen.

As for ones which I may have seen, worry not - I've been seriously crap about getting to the cinema to see much other then Potter and LOTR in recent years.

Ta for the suggestions. :)

Ah in that case, can I add:

- Moulin Rouge
- Spirited Away
- American Psycho
- Leon
- Mulholland Drive
- Memento
- American Beauty
- Donnie Darko
- Fight Club
- Requiem for a Dream

Ok really am going to bed now...
