I think it depends on how you define "shoes" - this calls for an ontology! Ahem.

In my case, I'm counting:

Slippers *
Sandals *
Flippers
Trainers
Smart black shoes
Dance shoes
Normal boots *
SJA boots *
Climbing shoes
Roller blades
Ballet shoes

* = worn regularly

I think I have one or two pairs of old shoes that I haven't got round to throwing out yet, but they don't count.
I think I'd count flippers and rollerblades as sports equipment worn on the foot, rather than footware per se. Likewise, were I surveying gloves I'd not expect boxing gloves to count unless one was being pedantic. :)
Oh phew; I forgot to count my climbing shoes, but I don't really think of them as shoes so much as torture devices that nevertheless help me not fall off walls.
